Amazon: The new product search engine

Introduction:
Internet has been playing an important role in almost everyone’s life since its existence. It has become so vital that people are using it for their daily activities right from using an e-mail to diagnosing diseases. Google is the most visited site on internet, reaching around 1 trillion visits per year. Whenever we have a question, first thing that pops up in our mind is Google. It offers so many services ranging from web search to blogging.

On the other hand, when it comes to buying products online, Amazon is the most popular option among people, for it is the largest Internet-based retailer in the world. Through Amazon, we can buy a wide variety of products and get them delivered to us in front of our door steps. This article tries to compare popular product search engines available on the internet.

Amazon Vs Google as product search engine:

Google is the most popular search engine. But when it comes to product search, we have to rethink our declaration. To explore further on this topic, let’s compare product search engines. A survey has been conducted by e-commerce personalization start up Bloom Reach. This survey includes 2000 US consumers, who are asked for their preference of product search engine. The results of this survey showed that 44 percent of respondents go directly to Amazon to start their product searches, whereas only 34 percent of people search for products on Google. This proves that Amazon is preferred over Google for product search.
To strengthen our point, another survey of 1,000 US consumers conducted by Power Reviews found that Amazon is the preferred starting point for product search, which is followed by Google. Next comes the brand/retailer sites and e-commerce marketplaces like e-bay etc. Here is the statistical data of usage of different product search engines obtained through this survey.

To better understand the search trends among Google and Amazon, a press release about Bloom Reach study to Forrester told us that 30 percent of online buyers used Amazon to do research on required products whereas only 13 percent used Google to do this task. This puts Amazon as a winner.

How is Amazon better as product search engine?

This success of Amazon is due to the availability of reviews, flexibility of product selection, free shipping and deals/pricing. Also,Amazon has invested a lot in developing advanced algorithmic recommendation capabilities. With this, 75 percent of consumers feel that no other online retailer can serve better than Amazon, followed by Walmart with 9 percent and eBay at 8 percent.

Another reason is that Amazon has an app for their consumers through which we can shop products without reaching for their website. This app is simple and well-organized, which gives it an advantage over traditional website. It has been revealed that 50 percent of Amazon’s mobile traffic growth is coming from its app sinceit can be done anywhere they want with just a smart phone.

Conclusion
Even though Google claims to be the most used search engine and has around 65 percent of search market, this study on product search engine unarguably showed that Amazon product search has dominated the growth of Google as a successful product search engine. Who knows, may be Google comes up with an extraordinary strategy to suppress Amazon’s e-commerce. Anyhow, at this point, Amazon dominated Google in product search and become no.1 product search engine.
